Rounded Rectangle: Text Box: Congratulations to our fifteen new graduates who will start their postsecondary education at the Community College of Rhode Island this fall. These remarkable men and women join over 130 former graduates who have enrolled in higher education. Their successes reinforce our mission to provide a “second chance” to non-traditional adult learners whose dreams are to enter college.

As I watch our 14th class spread their wings, I am once again reminded of the important role TTC plays in our students’ lives. By providing them with individual and personalized attention from day one through graduation and beyond, I see them gain confidence in their own ability, maybe for the first time. Many of our students tell me that they might not have had the courage to continue their education without the help of our transitional program.

The following quote summarizes the basic tenets and mission of our program:

“Everyone has a purpose in life . . . a unique gift or special talent to give others. And when we blend this unique talent with service to others, we experience the ecstasy and exultation of our own spirit, which is the ultimate goal of all goals.”

Text Box: We began class with introductions to one another and to the wonderful world of literature. The students read a great, New York Times bestseller, Tell No One. This thriller kept us turning the pages every week!
And if reading a novel and discussing it in small groups wasn’t enough, students also learned about critical thinking, reading techniques and study strategies necessary to be successful in college. Each also TAUGHT a less to his/her classmates. (Talk about courage!) The students gave oral presentations and performed original songs and poetry during our exploration of stated and implied main ideas.
Hard work, collaboration, creativity, and evidence that the premise of implied main ideas was understood manifested themselves through these performances. BRAVO!
Lastly, the “piece de resistance” was the culmination of our time together, the final project and presentations on Tell No One. The only criteria were time and effort. To say the least, time and effort were definitely used. The projects were above and beyond expectation.
Leslie Dolan has been teaching TTC students for the last six semesters. Many thanks to Leslie !
